This collection of southern boys are not the most original band in the world. They’ll never be accused of being the most musically gifted fellas in the world. Certainly, no one will ever listen to them and think, “wow, that’s really cutting edge music”. To the contrary though, release in and release out, the same thought comes to mind

Sequels to albums, at least in my listening experience, are generally poor. The two that immediately jump to mind for me are Rob Zombie’s HELLBELLY DELUXE 2 and Meat Loaf’s BAT OUT OF HELL 2. Both releases were pretty lame, and garnered attention solely because they were named after much more historic releases in their creator’s career.

Megadeth - DYSTOPIA

DYSTOPIA

More than any other metal band in history, being a hardcore Megadeth fan is truly a rollercoaster ride. This is a band with multiple duds in their catalog, and yet they always seem to rebound. Think about it, they’ve truly had some bad releases in their catalog. RISK was terrible. THE WORLD NEEDS A HERO wasn’t a lot better. And yet, just when many were about to write them off, the bounced back with three straight great releases in THE SYSTEM HAS FAILED, UNITED ABOMINATIONS and ENDGAME. Even THIRTEEN wasn’t terrible, although it did have people wondering if they were falling again. ...and they did. SUPERCOLLIDER was pretty lousy, causing fans to once again wonder if this band had finally jumped the proverbial shark.

Depending on your perspective, Anthrax is either having a career resurgence or floundering at the end of their career. I’m stunned how many people actually didn’t like their last effort, FOR ALL KINGS. In these ears, that was the best effort of their career. What made it great, to me, was the mixture of crushing heaviness combined with some of the melodic elements they had during the Bush era of the band. Simply, I’ve played that album over 1000 times according to my cloud player, so it’s safe to say I love it!

Probably more than any release in their history, Slayer came into releasing this album at a crossroads. This WAS the album that, in many ways, dictated if the band could continue on or if it was indeed time to drift off quietly to Hell. The loss of guitarist Jeff Hanneman and the removal of drummer Dave Lombardo had almost every Slayer fan wondering if there was any reason at all to continue. You have to give it to the “new” Slayer though, they’ve delivered when it counted. While certainly not the best release in the band’s history, it is the best they have done in decades.

What happened to Machine Head really is a crime. Unfortunately for them, it's a crime they perpetrated upon themselves. With a mistake so many made in their youth, this band singlehandedly torpedoed themselves from ascending to the heights in metal held by only the select few like Metallica and Megadeth before them. After THE MORE THINGS CHANGE came out, they were on the cusp to be the predecessors to Pantera atop the heavy metal landscape. Low and behold though, they killed that dream by trying to incorporate a bit of trendiness to THE BURNING RED, and it killed that momentum completely. The followup SUPERCHARGER was a bit better, but still wasn't good enough to prove THE BURNING RED as an anomaly. That was the point that a lot of people jumped off. Sucks to be them really, because the last three releases, THROUGH THE ASHES OF EMPIRES, THE BLACKENING and UNTO THE LOCUST have all been as good as any metal album released in the last decade or so. Too little, too late I suppose.

Unless you call Testament a "thrash band" (which I don't personally), Exodus would rank as my favorite true Thrash band of all time. They have had good times and bad. Occasionally, like on FABULOUS DISASTER, they have misstepped along the way. But overall, they are one of the true powerhouses in the history of thrash metal. Since 2004 when they put the band back together, they have been far stronger than at any time in their career. For the last decade, it has been the polarizing Rob Dukes leading the band vocally. He was replaced earlier this year by the again returning Steve "Zetro" Souza; a move that has found both praise and criticism amongst the hardcore fans of the band. It makes sense, really. With Dukes, the band simply got heavier and more vicious. This leaves people to wonder what would happen with Zetro returning to the band. Well, they certainly didn't slow down. BLOOD IN, BLOOD OUT is as heavy as anything the guys have done to date.
