I'm sure I'm not in the minority here, but I'm glad that we now have a killer version of Accept with Mark Tornillo as well as the continuation of U.D.O. with Udo Dirkschneider. In short, it's led to both bands stepping up their game and creating great music. While neither side will admit competition with the other band, the fans certainly

Being completely honest here, I really didn't expect a whole lot out of this. I'm not the biggest Stryper fan in the world by a long shot, and the truth is that I just never could fully get into Michael Sweet's vocals. There's just always been something about him. I'm not sure what it is. I guess

In a year that has see a foundational piece of AC/DC succumb to a debilitating illness and another to his own personal insanity, AC/DC emerges after seemingly forever away with ROCK OR BUST. To be fair and truthfully honest, expectations on this release were pretty low. I know that AC/DC is a band that's been in business almost 50

David Coverdale and company have had a very long and successful history that started even before he formed Whitesnake. There's no denying the legacy here. There's an unwritten rule that I rarely follow here in Cleveland. That rule is that if a band is from Cleveland, I'm supposed to write all glowing things or else be called a hater by the local community. It's sad that it's like that, but the truth is what it is. For years I've lived with that stigma, to the point

What happened to Machine Head really is a crime. Unfortunately for them, it's a crime they perpetrated upon themselves. With a mistake so many made in their youth, this band singlehandedly torpedoed themselves from ascending to the heights in metal held by only the select few like Metallica and Megadeth before them. After THE MORE THINGS CHANGE came

With the music industry pretty much dead anymore, nothing really comes off as shocking. After all, you have very desperate companies trying to hang on and make money from an industry that has about as much relevance today as the typewriter ribbon makers of the world still do. The current trend for the last half decade

Lacuna Coil - BROKEN CROWN HALO

BROKEN CROWN HALO

CD
MP3

It's not really much of a secret that two of my favorite bands out there today are fronted by ladies. Those two bands are Halestorm and Lacuna Coil. While it took me awhile to latch onto Halestorm, Lacuna Coil was a band that I latched on the very first time I heard them. I remember getting a sampler from Century Media that had the song "Heaven's A Lie" on it, and knowing this would soon be one of my favorite bands out there. I've seen the band several times, and they've gotten better with every tour as well. The combined male-female vocals of Andrea Ferro and the lovely Cristina Scabbia brings one of the most appealing sounds to the entire Goth Metal subgenre; a subgenre that overwrought with far too much orchestral crap and not enough straight up rock and metal. BROKEN CROWN HALO is certainly not the band's best work, but it works for them. It's good, not great. In many ways, it sounds like they may have just decided to play it safe and stay the course this time around. At least they chose a path that's been working.

TIME TRAVELERS & BONFIRES

CD

Sevendust are really a band for the fans, and the fans are definitely always there for the band. Case in point - their latest release TIME TRAVELERS & BONFIRES. This release is one paid for by the latest trend hitting the music business, pre-funding by the fans to pay for a project. The band asked for a lot for this campaign, and got 245% funding from their fans in return. So what did Sevendust do with that money? Well, they created a very cool release that, while different from anything they've ever done studio-wise, is about as good as anything they've created to date. An acoustic release featuring fix new tracks and acoustic reworkings of some of their most popular material, TIME TRAVELERS & BONFIRES connects on every level with the established fanbase. For a band that gets so much from their fans, that's just what you would expect.

ARE YOU KIDDING ME? NO.

I am 100% a fan of music, and specifically metal, that goes into some very weird and crazy places. Mike Patton rates at the top of my musical food chain with all the weirdness that he consistently has brought to his various projects. While I love a lot of mainstream stuff, there's always a soft spot in my musical taste that's long been filled with bands like Mr. Bungle, Dog Fashion Disco and the like. Enter Destrage - a band that I had never heard of until the day a publicist hit me up and informed me that i should give this one a try as it's "kind of bizarre". Well, he definitely nailed that. A combination of everything from Protest The Hero, Lamb Of God and Primus, Destrage's ARE YOU KIDDING ME? NO. is a very interesting and fun listen.

MEN OF HONOR

Being completely honest, the debut Adrenaline Mob release OMERTA didn't do a lot for me. This is surprising actually, as vocalist Russell Allen is one of those guys that I always look forward to hearing from, regardless of the project he's doing at the time. Still, OMERTA was one of those supergroup releases that just didn't have a lot of "get up" to it. It was there, a pretty bland collection of hard rock, sometimes modern metal songs that just kind of went nowhere. The band is back, sans Mike Portnoy who has once again band hopped to a new project. MEN OF HONOR is, most certainly, better than OMERTA is just about every way imaginable. It's still pretty standard faire, but it is a more compelling listen than their previous effort.

RETRIBUTION

Since I first discovered Ektomorf back in 2004 on their DESTROY release, they have been one that, while I never sat around waiting for a release, I've always loved when they had something new out there. As heavy music goes, they are the perfect combination of what I like. They are kind of like the lovechild of Sepultura, Soulfly and Machine Head; all wrapped up into one menacing, brutal package. A couple years ago, they surprised a lot of people with THE ACOUSTIC (which is an acoustic release) and BLACK FLAG. It was surprising because both were pretty weak releases from Ektomorf. Happily, they are back and more pissed off than ever. RETRIBUTION is a very defiant callback to this band's better days.
