More than any other metal band in history, being a hardcore Megadeth fan is truly a rollercoaster ride. This is a band with multiple duds in their catalog, and yet they always seem to rebound. Think about it, they’ve truly had some bad releases in their catalog. RISK was terrible. THE WORLD NEEDS A HERO wasn’t a lot better. And yet,

Depending on your perspective, Anthrax is either having a career resurgence or floundering at the end of their career. I’m stunned how many people actually didn’t like their last effort, FOR ALL KINGS. In these ears, that was the best effort of their career. What made it great, to me, was the mixture of crushing heaviness combined with some

When I first saw Sevendust’s new release was titled KILL THE FLAW, my initial thought was “what exactly is the flaw?” It leads you to wonder just what it is that caused this band to not break big, while bands with lesser quality catalogs like Disturbed or Korn had such crazy amounts of success at the same time. This

They don’t do it that often anymore, but there’s always excitement when Iron Maiden comes out with new music. Knowing that they are closing in on the end of their career, you really do end up hoping that when they go out for good, it will be with a bang. I think it’s universally agreed upon that

Probably more than any release in their history, Slayer came into releasing this album at a crossroads. This WAS the album that, in many ways, dictated if the band could continue on or if it was indeed time to drift off quietly to Hell. The loss of guitarist Jeff Hanneman and the removal of drummer Dave Lombardo had almost every Slayer

Geoff Tate’s falling out and subsequent two years of lawsuits, multiple versions of the same band and overall craziness in the press definitely tarnished a legacy that once seemed untouchable. Think about it. Even with over a decade of arguably bad releases (Q2K, TRIBE, AMERICAN SOLDIER, DEDICATED TO CHAOS), it wasn’t until the now infamous spitting incident and the

W.A.S.P. is one of those bands that has a ridiculously loyal fanbase...and good for them, actually. Doing THE CLASSIC METAL SHOW, we get shit on repeatedly anytime we say anything that is less than glowing about W.A.S.P., Blackie Lawless or any of the band’s former or present members. Oh well...comes with the territory, I guess. After what seems like quite a

Fozzy - DO YOU WANNA START A WAR

DO YOU WANNA START A WAR

All the stars are aligned for me to be an absolute worshipper of Fozzy. And yet, I'm just not. It's not that I don't want to be. I'm a huge fan of the WWE, which is where Chris Jericho calls home professionally at least part of the time. To that fact, I'm a fan of Chris Jericho in wrestling, as his in ring mic skills and his wrestling ability are far better than 9 of every 10 people in the sports entertainment world. Fozzy guitarist Rich Ward is one of my favorite guitarists of all time. I was always a gigantic supporter of his band Stuck Mojo, and his solo release (The Duke - MY KUNG FU IS GOOD) never goes more than a month without me rockin' out to it. Drummer Frank Fontsere also comes from Stuck Mojo, and I truly enjoyed hanging with him and Rich on many occasions outside in their camper at Ron's Crossroads in Akron before they played gigs there. And yet, for whatever reason, Fozzy releases disc after disc that just don't do it for me.

There's something to be said about persistence. Prey On The Fallen have been blowing up my email and Facebook for a few months to get me to review their CD. That's usually a formula for an instant discard of their music to be honest, but these guys did it with a politeness that's refreshing. The reality is that I've been buried in other projects, which is the only reason I didn't get to this one sooner. PREY ON THE FALLEN is not a release that will reinvent the wheel by any stretch of the imagination, but if you are into chugging heavy metal with touches of 80s flair in it, then these guys will probably keep you very well entertained.

In a regular week, Pitriff receives about 50 emails from bands out there that are simply looking for exposure. They are all armed with their tales of concertgoer conquest. They all comes with lists of the greatest bands in the world with whom they've shared the stage. They all have their own story as to why they are the next big thing in the music world...if only Pitriff will be the online publication that puts them on the map with some attention. To be honest, I download about 1 out of every hundred releases that I'm offered this way. The sheer volume of music received from established acts just doesn't allow enough time to discover all these bands; even knowing that I'm probably missing a great one every now and again. Sometimes though, one of those requests pays dividends when I do give it a listen.

Lacuna Coil - BROKEN CROWN HALO

BROKEN CROWN HALO

It's not really much of a secret that two of my favorite bands out there today are fronted by ladies. Those two bands are Halestorm and Lacuna Coil. While it took me awhile to latch onto Halestorm, Lacuna Coil was a band that I latched on the very first time I heard them. I remember getting a sampler from Century Media that had the song "Heaven's A Lie" on it, and knowing this would soon be one of my favorite bands out there. I've seen the band several times, and they've gotten better with every tour as well. The combined male-female vocals of Andrea Ferro and the lovely Cristina Scabbia brings one of the most appealing sounds to the entire Goth Metal subgenre; a subgenre that overwrought with far too much orchestral crap and not enough straight up rock and metal. BROKEN CROWN HALO is certainly not the band's best work, but it works for them. It's good, not great. In many ways, it sounds like they may have just decided to play it safe and stay the course this time around. At least they chose a path that's been working.

TIME TRAVELERS & BONFIRES

Sevendust are really a band for the fans, and the fans are definitely always there for the band. Case in point - their latest release TIME TRAVELERS & BONFIRES. This release is one paid for by the latest trend hitting the music business, pre-funding by the fans to pay for a project. The band asked for a lot for this campaign, and got 245% funding from their fans in return. So what did Sevendust do with that money? Well, they created a very cool release that, while different from anything they've ever done studio-wise, is about as good as anything they've created to date. An acoustic release featuring fix new tracks and acoustic reworkings of some of their most popular material, TIME TRAVELERS & BONFIRES connects on every level with the established fanbase. For a band that gets so much from their fans, that's just what you would expect.
